Warning Signs
How to tell your spring is going.
Catching it early saves the opener, the door, and a bigger repair bill. Watch for these.
Loud bang
A sudden snap from the garage is the classic sign a torsion spring let go.
Door won't open
The opener strains or stops — it can't lift the door's full weight without the spring.
Visible gap in spring
A 1–2 inch gap in the coil above the door means it's broken.
Jerky movement
The door shudders, hesitates, or moves unevenly as it travels.
Crooked / one-sided
One side lifts faster, leaving the door tilted in the opening.
Slams shut
The door drops fast instead of lowering smoothly — a safety hazard.

Know Your Door
Torsion vs. extension springs.
Two systems do the heavy lifting. We service and replace both — and fit the right one for your door.
Torsion springs
Mounted on a shaft above the door. Common on modern doors — durable and balanced. Standard and high-cycle options available for longer life.
Extension springs
Run along the horizontal tracks on each side. Found on many older or lighter doors. We replace in pairs with safety cables.
High-cycle upgrade
Rated for more open/close cycles — a smart choice for doors used many times a day. Ask if it's right for your home.

Spring repair FAQs
Can you replace a broken spring the same day?
Yes — broken springs are at the top of our priority list, because a door with a snapped torsion or extension spring is too heavy to lift safely and often traps a car inside. We carry the common spring sizes for most residential doors on the truck, so in many cases we respond the same day and finish in one visit. We replace in matched pairs and check the cables, rollers, and balance while we’re there, so the door runs smoothly and the new springs last. You get an exact, written price before we start. Call (737) 347-1246 to check today’s availability.
Should I use my door with a broken spring?
No — don’t operate a door with a broken spring. The springs counterbalance the door’s weight, so with one snapped the door is suddenly hundreds of pounds of dead weight: the opener can be damaged trying to lift it, and the door can slam shut on a car, pet, or person. If a spring just broke, leave the door down, don’t use the opener, and call (737) 347-1246. We’ll get a tech out quickly and replace it safely.
Torsion or extension — which do I have?
Torsion springs mount on a metal shaft above the door opening and wind/unwind as the door moves — most modern doors use these. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on each side and stretch as the door closes, more common on older or lighter doors. You don’t need to identify it yourself; send a photo or just call (737) 347-1246 and we’ll confirm the type, source the right spring, and replace it. We stock both for the common residential door sizes in the Austin area.
Is the replacement under warranty?
Yes — new springs we install carry our 3-year parts warranty, and the labor is covered by a 90-day warranty. We replace torsion springs in matched pairs for even wear and balanced travel, which protects both the springs and the opener. If anything isn’t operating right after we leave, call (737) 347-1246 and we’ll make it right.
How long does a spring replacement take?
A typical spring replacement is completed in the same visit — often under an hour to an hour and a half for a standard residential door, including swapping the springs, checking the cables and rollers, and re-balancing the door so it opens smoothly. Doors with custom or oversized springs may take a little longer or need a specific part ordered. We’ll tell you up front, and you get an exact price before we begin. Call (737) 347-1246.
Why did my spring break?
Springs are wear parts with a rated lifespan measured in cycles — every open-and-close uses one cycle, and a standard spring is rated for roughly 10,000 cycles, so most break simply from normal use after several years. Cold snaps (common in Central Texas winters) often push a tired spring over the edge, which is why so many break on the first freezing morning. Rust, poor lubrication, and an unbalanced door shorten their life. Replacing in pairs and an occasional tune-up extends it. Call (737) 347-1246 if yours just went.
Can I replace a garage door spring myself?
We strongly recommend against it. Garage door springs are wound under extreme tension and store enough energy to cause serious injury if they release while you’re working — DIY spring jobs send people to the ER every year. Beyond the danger, getting the winding, balance, and matched pairing right takes the proper tools and experience, or the door rides unevenly and wears out the opener. It’s genuinely a job for an insured tech. Call (737) 347-1246 and we’ll handle it safely.
Do you replace both springs or just the broken one?
On a two-spring (dual-torsion) door we recommend replacing both, even if only one broke. The springs are the same age and cycle count, so the second is usually close behind — replacing the pair avoids a second service call within months and keeps the door balanced, which protects the opener. If your door uses a single spring, we replace the one. We’ll explain what your door has and quote it clearly. Call (737) 347-1246.
Which areas do you cover for spring replacement?
Edge Garage Doors replaces garage door springs across Cedar Park and the Greater Austin area — including Austin, Round Rock, Pflugerville, Georgetown, Leander, Hutto, Buda, Kyle, San Marcos, Bastrop, Dripping Springs, Bee Cave, and Lakeway. Because broken springs are urgent, we keep common sizes stocked and can often respond same-day across the metro. Call (737) 347-1246 to confirm availability at your address.
